Data Licensing, Methodology & Disclaimer

This page provides information regarding datasets utilised within the Dunkley Biodiversity Audit. To maintain transparency, all external data pipelines are documented below.

1. Topographic & Elevation Data

  • Source Agency: Geoscience Australia via the ELVIS Elevation platform.

  • Dataset Utilised: Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of Australia derived from LiDAR - 5 Metre Grid.

  • Licensing: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

  • Data Use Statement: This baseline 5m elevation grid provides the fundamental topography data for the Audit.

2. Baseline Biodiversity

  • Source Agency: Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Victorian Government.

  • Dataset Utilised: Victorian Biodiversity Atlas (VBA) Flora & Fauna Records.

  • Licensing: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

  • Data Use Statement: These records are used in order to cross-reference historical species prescence against current field observations.

3. Acoustic Analysis

  • Source Tool: BirdNET platform (Cornell Lab of Ornithology / Chemnitz University of Technology).

  • Data Processed: Audio data captured during audit sessions is processed using the BirdNET neural network engine to verify avian vocalisations.

  • Data Use Statement: BirdNET is utilised in addition to local analysis and community verification (primarily via iNaturalist). Confirmed acoustic identifications are categorised and mapped to verify species presence across target reserves.

4. Community Citizen-Science

  • Source Platform: iNaturalist

  • Data Sourced: Regional taxon presence lists within the Frankston Local Government Area (LGA).

  • Licensing: Open-access public taxonomic metadata.

  • Data Use Statement: Public species checklists are indexed purely to verify regional presence and standardise nomenclature across the audit platform. This process does not link to, or reproduce individual user observations, coordinates, personal identifiers, or community-contributed media.

5. Meteorological & Microclimate Data

  • Source Engine: Visual Crossing Weather API.

  • Data Sourced: Historical meteorological logs (ambient temperature, relative humidity) for the Frankston weather station corridor.

  • Data Use Statement: This data feeds directly into the audit's weather calculations to model variance, and is supplemented by local measurements taken over the course of the audit project.

6. Native Media, Graphic Assets & Intellectual Property

  • Source Creators: Nathan Carolus (Primary Media) and lah_dots (Graphic Assets).

  • Assets Covered: Original photography, bioacoustic field recordings, and custom-designed species placeholder artwork utilised across the platform.

  • Licencing & Terms of Use: All original photography and audio recordings captured during the audit remain the intellectual property of Nathan Carolus. This media is made available under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). Any reuse must include explicit attribution to the Dunkley Biodiversity Audit.

Custom illustrations graphics are original assets created specifically for this project by lah_dots. These assets are for useexclusively in relation to this projectand may not be reproduced, redistributed, or altered without express written permission from the artist.

7. General Disclaimer

Data displayed on this platform is for non-commercial conservation, community education, and research purposes only. While every effort is made to clean, interpolate, and verify coordinate and elevation accuracy via geometric modelling, findings should be interpreted alongside formal frameworks.
